This type of beehive is widely spread in Romania and is also known as Dadant beehive. It is composed of a main body know as “nest” with 9-12 1/1 frames for brood chambers and hibernation. In the summer you can add extra bodies with smaller size, named storage boxes, used for honey harvesting. These storage box contain 3/4 frames of 435×230 mm and 1/2 frames of 435x162mm.
The vertical beehives reproduce the life of the bees in natural conditions: the family progresses vertically, the food is stored above the brood chamber and the area where the queen bee deposits the eggs expands vertically.
The frames of the vertical beehive are laid in two or more layers in the same box or in multi staged bodies. The frames can be perpendicular or parallel with the bee entrance.
MULTI-LEVEL BEEHIVES – STAS 8128-68
This type of beehive is composed of overlapped equal size boxes. A box contains 10 3/4 frames for a STAS ME beehive or 10 1/2 frames for a reduced multi-level beehives or a MER beehive.
This type of beehive completes the essential need of the hive and allows to the beekeeper to easily manage the development of the bee family. Multi-level beehives are composed of more bodies and a small number of medium frames. This configuration is ideal for treatments can help expanding the hive, the production of honey and the storage of quality food.
The boxes reversing is specific for the multi-level beehives. The boxes reversing means that we take an upper box, where the brood developed, and move it at the bottom of the beehive. Its place is taken by a lower box that contains empty honey combs. Inside the beehive is created an environment that allows the queen bee to lay much more eggs. In the box placed at the bottom of the beehive the brood hatches and leaving the cells empty. We can increase the volume of the beehive by adding extra bodies is the brood expands too much. This situation does not disturb the normal development of the bee family because usually these extra bodies have a small volume.
THE HORIZONTAL BEEHIVE
The horizontal beehive is called like this because the bee family develops horizontally, by adding extra frames. The horizontal beehive is ideal for the beginners because its maintenance can be made easily. The beehive contains 20 1/1 frames of 435x300mm.
The horizontal beehives consists of a parallelepipedic room where the frames are placed in one row. The elements of the beehive are: the body, frames, inner cover and upper cover and the beehive gear.
The nest is placed in the middle of the beehive and on the sides are placed the frames for food storage. The size of the beehive and the expanding of the space needed for food storage goes horizontally by adding extra frames according to the development technologies. In the horizontal beehives, the bees deposit the honey starting from the upper part of the frames. During the periods of abundant harvesting the honey is also stored is the cells where the brood develops. In this situation the area where the brood develops goes down. The honey storage and the birth of the brood take place is the same time which keep the potential of the bee family.
